Sucralfate - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Sucralfate cause?

​The most common side effect associated with sucralfate is constipation. Other side effects include dry mouth and nausea. If persistent, or if these effects cause significant discomfort, please consult your healthcare professional.

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Before taking Sucralfate , what precautions must I follow?

​Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication.
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies.

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Sucralfate ?

​This drug commonly affects the effect of other drugs administered at the same time. Space at least 2 hours apart from other medications. Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking other medications. This includes but is not limited to some medications for the treatment of brittle bones (e.g. alendronate/risedronate), certain heart medications, medications for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and warfarin. In some cases, this can be overcome by separating administration of these medications by an appropriate time interval. Seek the advice of your healthcare professional where applicable.
