Glaucoma

Synonym(s):

The Glaucoma department provides holistic care for many glaucoma conditions, including complex post-surgical cases often referred from across the globe, led by Associate Professor Shamira Perera (Head and Senior Consultant). Its advanced technologies enable early glaucoma detection and monitoring, enabling informed treatment decisions such as laser therapies and surgical options.

Our Care Services

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused when high fluid pressure within the eye damages the delicate fibres of the optic nerve. The main aim of glaucoma treatment is to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP) while maintaining the patient's quality of life. The team provides comprehensive management solutions, giving patients enough time with the doctors and nurses via streamlined clinics. This allows patients to address their individual concerns and have cost-effective, consultant-led care regardless of the condition's severity.

Why Choose SNEC?

Quality Assurance

  • Several team members continue to publish their works widely in glaucoma and ophthalmology.
  • A $25 million glaucoma research grant from the National Research Foundation Singapore will aim to significantly lower the rate of blindness from glaucoma.
  • In addition, regular audit and research enable the team to allow for quality control.

Advanced Technology

  • Advances in surgery have opened up less intrusive options for patients collectively named Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery which might be suitable for some patients.
  • Also, its strong partnerships with industry grant early access to innovations in glaucoma care. This unique advantage allows SNEC to be among the first to trial and implement new devices and medications.

Training the Experts

  • Up to eight International clinical fellows and four research fellows are trained annually, strengthening links and collaborations in the region and beyond. Its education, counselling and support group services empower patients to manage their disease more actively.
