Fellowship in Glaucoma

Objective

The SNEC Glaucoma Fellowship programme encompasses clinical and surgical training including research in glaucoma. It is expected that on completion of the fellowship programme, competency in surgical and laser management of glaucoma patients should be attained.

Programme Details

Clinical Exposure

  • Management and treatment of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma, Acute Primary Angle Closure, Chronic Angle Closure Glaucoma and Secondary Glaucoma

  • Investigation techniques:

    • Visual Field Analysis

    • Optic Disc Analysis, Stereo photography and Nerve Fibre Analysis

    • Ultrasound Biomicroscopic examination and anterior segment OCT of the anterior segment

  • The Glaucoma fellow will be directly responsible for following up all glaucoma patients admitted to the eye ward in SGH. He/she will also be actively involved in the day-to-day management of the patients while in the ward, together with the glaucoma consultant and glaucoma registrar

  • The fellow will be on call daily (third-line call) for glaucoma referrals


Surgical Exposure

  • The fellow will actively assist and perform glaucoma procedures under the direct supervision and training of the principal and associate fellowship supervisors. There will be at least two glaucoma surgery sessions per week where the glaucoma fellow will be attached to the supervisors

  • The be trained in the following glaucoma procedures

    • Trabeculectomy with and without antimetabolites

    • Combined ECCE and trabeculectomy

    • Combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy

    • Seton implants

    • Cyclo-destructive procedures – Cyclo cryo therapy and cyclo diode laser

  • In addition, the fellow will be attached to the Laser Clinic of the Principal Fellowship Supervisor to be trained in various glaucoma laser procedures


Educational / Research Exposure

  • Fellows are required to participate in clinical rounds and daily ward reviews, journal clubs/teaching programmes, retrospective and prospective clinical research and quality assurance audit programmes of the department. All fellows will also participate in teaching of residents and/or medical students and attend all SNEC meetings

  • A minimum of one research session per week will be dedicated for the fellow to pursue meaningful research projects during the one-year fellowship programme. This may take the form of epidemiological studies, clinical trials or basic research projects
