Profile

Dr Tan Tien-En is a Consultant with the Cataract & Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre, and is also a sub-specialty fellow with the Medical Retina and Surgical Retina Departments, under the Advanced Clinical Specialist Program. His current practice includes the management of cataracts, and retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr Tan completed his medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 2014, and graduated as a top student, with an MBBS (Honours). He was the recipient of many awards for academic excellence, including the Gold Medal and Book Prize in Ophthalmology, the S.S. Ratnam Book Prize, the Nihal Kaur Memorial Medal, the Nihal Kaur Sidhu Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Singapore Medical Association Bronze Medal, and the Yeo Khuan Joo Gold Medal. Dr Tan completed his specialist training in Ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre in 2022. During his training he was recognized with the Outstanding Resident Award three times, was conferred the Richard Fan Gold Medal Award, and served as Chief Resident of the Ophthalmology Residency Programme. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), and was conferred a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology, M Med(Ophth), and the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) Medal in 2020. Dr Tan completed the Ophthalmology Exit Examination in 2022, where he was a double Gold medallist.

Dr Tan firmly believes in the importance of research, and relying on scientific evidence to provide the best care for his patients. His research interests include developing gene-based and other novel therapies for blinding inherited and age-related retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and artificial intelligence, and he has published scientific papers in respected journals in these areas. Dr Tan has also been invited to speak at international scientific meetings, where he has been awarded for his research work and presentations. He was inducted into the Khoo Scholars’ Programme by Duke-NUS Medical School in 2020, and is an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme (EYE ACP) in Duke-NUS Medical School.

Dr Tan also believes in mentoring and educating the next generation, and is a keen clinical educator who has been recognized for his dedication with awards such as the Inspiring Resident Educator Award in 2020 and 2022, the SNEC-SERI Young Educator Award (Senior Resident) in 2021, and the SNEC-SERI Outstanding Educator Award in 2022. Dr Tan was appointed as a SingHealth Associate in Education in 2022.
