Profile

​Dr Ruth Chen is a Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). She qualified from St. George's, University of London in 2009. In that same year, she also obtained a Diploma in International Public Health from the University of Kansas, USA. She went on to complete her foundation training along the South Coast of England, before pursuing her postgraduate ophthalmic training in Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Dr Chen was admitted as a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London) in 2017 and thereafter undertook a two-year fellowship in Medical Education at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, in collaboration with the Nottingham Medical School. Upon completion of her residency training, she pursued the highly esteemed glaucoma fellowship at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital before taking up her consultant job at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. Dr Chen returned to Singapore in 2023 to practise at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital under the umbrella of the National University Health System (NUHS), before joining SNEC in 2024.

Apart from managing general ophthalmic conditions, Dr Chen also treats glaucoma cases. She has experience with minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, minimally invasive bleb surgery (using the Preserflo microshunt device) and the Paul Glaucoma Implant.

Dr Chen’s other interests include medical education. She has attained a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Nottingham (UK), obtaining a distinction grade for her thesis. Her research stems from her passion to advance primary ophthalmic care and focused on enhancing undergraduate ophthalmic training through interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr Chen is committed to continuing this work locally and combines her experience in both clinical work and medical education to engage, empower and foster partnerships with both medical and allied healthcare professionals.
